Letita Peau-Folau presented on the topic ‘Preserving our Samoan Heritage’ as part of the Centre for Samoan Studies Seminar and Film Series 2019 at the National University of Samoa on Wednesday, 23rd October 2019.
According to Letitia ‘Preservation on cultural heritage villages often found that historic buildings and surroundings are carefully preserved while the Samoan way of life and socioeconomic structures are not.” Her presentation aimed at sharing how the Section 06 federal mandate process can be used to establish an effective way to successfully preserve Samoan Heritage and mitigate the impact of ground disturbance on our islands.
Letitia is the the Territorial Historic Preservation Officer for the U.S. Federal Government. She is also a Director in the Government of American Samoa, namely the American Samoa Historic Preservation Officer or ASHPO. In addition, Director Peau is a key member of the Project Notification Review Board (PNRS), which reviews all land-use applications to ensure all local and federally funded projects in American Samoa are in compliance witht he National Historic Protection Act (NHPA). As the Director of the ASHPO, Letitia’s primary goal is to preserve cultural and historical resources for the benefit of all Samoan people. She is tasked with advancing public awareness and preserving cultural heritage in the face of increasing foreign development projects. Director Peau is a member of numerous committees to ensure that social and cultural heritage is in the forefront of the development goals of the Samoan Archipelago.
