Solamalemalo Hai-Yuean Tualima had a presentation on the topic ‘Protection of traditional knowledge in the Pacific’, on the 15 August 2019, at the National University of Samoa as part of the CSS seminar and film series.
According to Solamalemalo “Traditional knowledge in the Pacific from an integral part of identity, linking the past, present and future, and is typically passed on from generation to generation. Intellectual properties and other regulatory frameworks impact the governance and survival of traditional knowledge in the Pacific. Her presentation examined “aforementioned regulatory frameworks and identify the implications of the current regulations.”
Solamalemalo has over 10 years of legal experience and she is currently a Scientia PhD Candidate at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. She also established the National Human Rights institution in the Samoa Ombudsman’s office, and has worked in private legal practice in New Zealand in the litigation team specialising in Treaty of Waitangi negotiations.
