Mulifanua-Lapita Site
Mulifanua-Lapita Site

In 1973 archaeologist Trevor Hansen identified Lapita pottery dredged from the Mulifanua harbor on the western tip of Upolu. Over 4000 pottery sherds were discovered and carbon dated to about 3,000BP and, to date, this is the only site in Samoa where Lapita pottery has been located. The land where this historic discovery was made has since been submerged and serves as the main departure point for ferries crossing to and from Savai’i.
